The Twelve (Probable) Laws of Apparel Sourcing 4: What recession didn’t kill, recovery won’t cure

Throughout the world since mid 2008, garment factories have been reportedly closing, and workers losing their jobs, at unprecedented rates. Naturally this has been blamed on the recession. The worst affected countries need to do a great deal more than just hope for a recovery. And, right now, there's very little evidence that many appreciate that. Never mind what that great deal more is. ../read more

Argentina's sales to the US and EU have declined to almost zero, across the board. The country's garment industry has had fluctuating success selling to its immediate neighbours, and has therefore shown declining interest in selling to the EU or US. Re-energised talks between the EU and the regional trade bloc, Mercosur, might reverse that - but any positive outcome from the talks is at least several years away Having enjoyed some success, particularly in knitwear, in both markets, during 2004, share was lost in 2005 and 2006. Argentina is expensive, so gains made in previous years are unlikely to be revived.

The Source is Clothesource's monthly newsletter.

Each month, we summarise major events in the world's apparel exporting countries and analyse what they mean for clothing buyers and sellers. We look at changes in trade rules and the really important market-influencing events in the major apparel importing countries. And we keep a permanent eye on what's happening in the world's major buying companies that's likely to influence how clothes are bought and sold.

Using the Clothesource Knowledge Base, we put these events into context, looking at how prices and market shares are actually influenced by events. And we apply the same rigour and scepticism to stories about Albania or El Salvador as we do to what's going on in India and China.
