UK government still hasn’t produced a lorry drivers’ guide
Bangladeshi garment factory owners threatened on September 7 to close their factories in the
trouble-torn Gazipur district for an indefinite period if the government fails to provide security for the industry by September 25.
But it seems hard to take this threat seriously. The September deadline passed – and the factories are still open. Indeed, in early September some were forecasting such optimistic sales for the rest of the year it looks unlikely they were serious about the threat at the time.
As many as 91 factory owners in the area reportedly signed the letter with the threat, adding a further eight-point charter of demands including loans for businesses. Virtually all contacted by a local newspaper on September 16 reported damaged factories or orders cancelled by worried buyers. But even vandalised factories were claiming sales were returning to target.
